It is prettier that way but it seems the trend these days is for
extensions of data files to indicate which application they are
associated with. Whether this is a good idea is no longer relevant.
Of course the unfortunate aspect of this trend is that there is
no registration authority for extensions, so software makers just
make these associations unilaterally, often causing conflicts with
other applications. This makes a big difference in OS's like
Windows 95, where clicking on a data file launches the associated
application.
